Released in December 2001, “Don’t Go 2 Sleep” isn’t a traditional Tupac Shakur album. Credited to Makaveli & Dillinger (one of Tupac’s aliases alongside producer Daz Dillinger), it’s a compilation EP featuring eight tracks. Despite its unorthodox format, “Don’t Go 2 Sleep” delivers a potent dose of Tupac’s signature lyrical fire and Daz Dillinger’s West Coast production mastery.
The original eight-track version kicks off with “Wake Up My People,” a stirring intro that sets the tone for the album’s social commentary. Tracks like “Nothin’ Left 2 Give” and “Life Goes On” find Tupac reflecting on the harsh realities of street life with his characteristic raw honesty. One of the album’s highlights is “Ambitionz Az A Ridah (Remix),” featuring an alternate, more aggressive take on Tupac’s iconic single. “Hol on Me” showcases Tupac’s melodic side, while “Krazy” delivers a dark and atmospheric banger. The EP closes with “Big Syke Interview,” a fascinating snippet of an interview with Tupac’s former Outlawz groupmate.
“Don’t Go 2 Sleep” isn’t without its flaws. Being a compilation, it lacks the thematic cohesion of a full-length album.
