Backing Vocals: Bo-Rock, Chuc Acrie, DJ Pooh, Lil’ C-Style, Salim H. Grant, Snoop DOgg, South Sentrell

Producer: Dave Slang, Daz Dillinger, DJ Pooh, L.T. Hutton, Sam Sneed, Snoop Dogg, Soopafly, Tha White Guy

LBC’s album, Haven’t You Heard, is a nostalgic journey through the golden era of West Coast hip hop. Comprising members from Long Beach, California, the group encapsulates the essence of the ’90s West Coast sound, with G-funk rhythms, smooth flows, and vivid storytelling.

Production and Sound

The album’s production is a quintessential representation of the West Coast style. The beats are rich with funky basslines, melodic synths, and groovy percussion that transport listeners back to the heyday of G-funk. Tracks like “Dippin In My Low Low” and “Blueberry” are prime examples, featuring that laid-back, yet infectious vibe that defines the genre.

Lyrics and Themes

Lyrically, Haven’t You Heard delves into themes of street life, loyalty, and the pursuit of success, often contrasted with the struggles and challenges faced by the crew. The narrative is raw and authentic, providing a glimpse into the lives of the LBC members. Their verses are delivered with a smooth, confident flow, showcasing their lyrical prowess and chemistry.

Differences Between Original and Retail Versions

One notable aspect of this album is the difference between its original tracklisting and the official retail version. Several songs were replaced in the retail release, altering the album’s dynamics:

  1. Removed Tracks: “Beware Of My Crew”, “Doggy Style ’96”, “Funk Wit Yo Brain”, and “Hit Rock” were excluded from the retail version. These tracks were significant parts of the original album, each bringing a unique element to the overall sound and narrative.
  2. Added Tracks: To fill the gaps, the retail version includes “Jacca’s Reunion”, “Doggfather’s Diciple”, “Gangsta”, and “Out The Moon (Daz Remix)”. These replacements maintain the album’s cohesion but inevitably change its intended impact.
  3. Track Edits: “Dippin In My Low Low” appears to be slightly shorter on the retail version compared to the original.
  4. Rights and Releases:
    • “Beware Of My Crew” was omitted due to rights issues with Warner Brothers, as it appeared on the soundtrack to the movie A Thin Line Between Love & Hate.
    • “Doggy Style ’96” was previously released on The Ultimate Death Row 4-disc compilation box-set.
    • “Funk Wit Yo Brain” and “Hit Rock” found their way onto other Death Row projects, like Snoop Doggy Dogg’s The Lost Sessions and Dead Man Walking respectively.

Production Choices

The decision by WIDEawake to release the album in this format reflects an approach focused on presenting unreleased material. Their aim appears to be offering a fresh listening experience rather than rehashing previously released tracks. The company opted not to remaster or mix the album, using reference CDs for the final product, which may affect the overall sound quality compared to remastered editions.

Standout Tracks

  1. “Dippin In My Low Low” – Despite the minor edit, it remains a standout with its smooth, cruising vibe.
  2. “Jacca’s Reunion” – A new addition that brings a fresh perspective to the album’s narrative.
  3. “Out The Moon (Daz Remix)” – A fitting inclusion that offers a nostalgic feel, potentially planned as a single release back in 1996.

Overall Impression

Haven’t You Heard is a solid addition to the West Coast hip hop legacy. While the differences between the original and retail versions may affect some fans’ perception, the album remains a testament to the enduring appeal of the genre. Fans of classic G-funk and ’90s hip hop will find much to appreciate. LBC manages to capture the essence of their roots while delivering a polished and engaging listening experience. With all the tracks now officially released, fans have the opportunity to recreate the original album experience as intended.
